All about Dino!
Oct. 11th, 2012 10:02 amThis is a rare public post that duplicates some stuff I've written here previously - if you're a regular LJ reader bear with me - I need to go over things from the start to catch people up who don't read here usually!!
If you've been reading my twitter/facebook feeds lately you'll no doubt have seen that we're buying a new pony!!
Meet Dino:

Firstly, I should set some facts straight!
1. That's not a pony, it's a 16HH horse.'Pony' is a much nicer word though, and it alliterates with Pico (our existing horse) so we habitually call them ponies, rather than horses.
2. I'm not buying him,
kekhmet is. I shall be sharing him like I currently share Pico, and do contribute a bit to his upkeep.
Dino is 5 years old. His birthday is in April (like Pico's!). He's PRE (or Andalusian for the uninitiated) x Clydesdale. The 'G' on his flank is the stud brand (Gray's PRE Stud) as he's being sold by the people who bred him. He's been backed earlier this year* and has been hacked out a bit but not done very much. He's sooooo calm and chilled he is perfect for us! What we were looking for is a horse that had not done very much so M and I could teach him lots of stuff but was calm enough that eventually some beginners (such as M's boyfriend) can learn to ride him. We are *very* excited! He's coming from the perfect hom - his breeder is lovely and very much treats her horses as we do. We met his mum and his dad when we saw him and they are lovely too.
He's called Dino after the dinosaur on the Flintstones - he was soooo large when he was born he had to be pulled out of his mum!
Dino will be arriving on Saturday, delivered by the people who bred him - they are keen that he goes to the right home and want a bit of a nose round our livery yard I think, but I'm really pleased to be buying from someone who cares about her horses. We've promised to keep in touch with her and let her know how he's getting on.
Here are a couple of videos (horrible YouTube quality - sorry!)
Firstly - Dino being lunged by the girl who backed him:
Secondly - me having a little walk on him:
So, it's all very exciting! I guess if you can't find me over the coming weeks I'm probably at the yard, although I really should be revising for my ACCA exams in December. Having a new pony would be a silly reason to fail them..!
*meaning he had someone riding him for the first time

Date: 2012-10-11 02:12 pm (UTC)Every year she'd ask me what I wanted for my birthday, and I'd promptly reply "A PONY!" before telling her what else more within her means (and mine when it came to the upkeep) I also might enjoy receiving. Sometimes along with other gifts she'd send me some silly little pony-themed thing, like stickers, or a pad of post-it notes cut shaped like a horse head or something. Or just get me a card with a horse on it. As you might with a pony-mad little girl* ;-)
So when I finally got my BSc and then a well paid job, and bought myself Pico, it was obvious that I declare I'd bought MYSELF A PONY!
*(She had plenty of experience with that, having lived through the actual pony mad little girl me as well of course, but she did eventually get us a real pony (and then another, and then horses after the ponies moved on to other little kids... ) back then, after we moved out to the countryside to a property with space and facilities for ponies at home ;-) )
