Jul. 7th, 2005 04:21 pmWhat a day. I was going to write a rant about the Olympics, but suddenly it doesn't seem so important. Firstly, I'm ok, everyone I know is ok, I've reassured all my family members and I've got home in one piece. I hope all the rest of you have managed to make it home - cycling has never seemed better.
On the way home another cyclist drew up next to me at some traffic lights and we chatted whilst we were waiting for the lights to change. Turns out he worked in Euston and lives in Brighton - he was cycling to East Croydon to see if he could get a train home from there as obviously no trains out of London, but he said if the worst happened he was simply goling to cycle all the way home. Now that's a long way, about 70 miles, and it wouldn't be fun but at least he could get there. It really struck me how mobile you are on a bike.
This whole thing is terrifying. I've left work early, I have stuff I can do from home, but really I didn't want to sit in Kennington any longer. I work very close to the Kennington Road which is one of the major trunk roads into central London from the South, and all day we could hear sirens and helicopters, and even when I was cycling home about an hour ago there were still lots of sirens moving around at speed. *shudder* And there are talks of suicide bombers.
I got the train into work this morning, fortunately because my bike was already there after I went out for dinner last night so I could get home ok, but I frequently get buses in and around central London - I cycle up Woburn Place very often, I'm actually quite scared. So now I'm sitting here watching the news, which is a bad idea, but at least everyone I know is in one piece.
