How the other half live
Jul. 22nd, 2004 09:21 amI got a letter from the parents of a child I sponsor in Pakistan today. It always amazes me when I get letters from them, this update also had photos. The child I sponsor is 4 years old, and lives in a small village in Punjab. It's amazing to see how different people's priorities are in different parts of the world - the thing they are most proud of is the fact they have a private toilet in their house. Can you imagine not having your own toilet at home? They have to walk to a well to get water however, which is over 1km away, and is untreated so not safe for humans to drink. I can't imagine having to walk to a well everyday to get water. It's quite humbling to remember how lucky we are in the developed parts of the world...and then it's quite sickening to think how much we take it for granted or misuse it. I'm going to write back to them at the weekend I think. It's funny, isn't it? Do you think they, as a muslim family, would be as grateful for my sponsorship if they knew I was a witch??
