Well, and last week's too actually...
Birth
This was an interesting idea. The film is about Anna who is about to remarry 10 years after her first husband died. A few weeks before the big day a 10 year old boy turns up who claims to be her dead husband. At first she doesn't believe him, but eventually she is convinced that he's telling the truth. Now, that's a really interesting plot idea - lots of big themes that the film makers could have explored, expect they didn't bother. It was really, really dull. The acting was fairly unconvincing on all counts and the plot lacked any serious developments which left me feeling that nothing had really happened. Not one to recommend!!
Alien vs. Predator
Take monsters from Alien, make them fight monsters from Predator and throw a few humans along for the ride. Ok, so the plot wasn't up to much, and I wasn't expecting it to be, but this was still lots of fun. Parts of the film had us laughing out loud , although I'm sure we weren't supposed to be. If you enjoy trashy Sci-fi type stuff then this is a better offer than most recent films in the genre, and no, not having seen any of the Alien or Predator films isn't going to be a problem!
The Manchurian Candidate
This is certainly the best of this weeks offerings! The story revolves around Major Bennett Marco, a Gulf War veteran whose unit was ambushed leaving 2 men dead and giving Sergeant Raymond Shaw the opportunity to save the day and win a nice big medal. 10 years later and sergeant Shaw is running for Vice President and Major Marco, along with all the other members of his unit are all suffering from strange dreams about what actually happened. This was really well made, the acting was fantastic - Meryl Streep in particular was terrifying as Sergeant Shaw's power mad mother and the plot flowed very well from start to finish. I thought Liev Schreiber captured the essence of Sergeant Shaw very well, pulling off a constant slight confusion behind an otherwise perfect politicians face very convincingly. All in all, a very good film that I greatly enjoyed and one I certainly recommend.
